20.02.2020 , 02.20.2020, regardless of how your fellow countrymen choose to form their dates, it doesn’t matter, Decentraland will launch to the public on the 20th February 2020. Note it down in your diary now, it’s been a long time in coming, and it promises to be a spectacle.
Today, Decentraland announced that the first ever, blockchain based, decentralized metaverse will open its doors to the public.
To celebrate the launch, a metaverse-wide treasure hunt will ensue, housed in various creatively designed scenes across the Decentraland map, aimed at showcasing the possiblities within Decentraland using the SDK and the Builder tool. Building truly is open to all, regardless of skill set.
Decentralization is Key
The announcement also outlined plans to move to a decentralized infrastructure right from the very beginning:
“The launch includes the establishment of the Decentraland DAO, full decentralization of the world’s infrastructure (communications between users and the serving of content), and, most importantly, public access to the very best the Metaverse has to offer. From now on, no single agent will have the power to modify the rules of the software, curate LAND content, modify the economics of MANA, upgrade the LAND smart contract unilaterally, or prevent others from accessing the world, among other decentralization features.”

In reply to the news, MANA (the official currency within Decentraland) hiked 15% in value, and LAND frantically started to switch hands as bids were accepted, deals were completed and confidence spiked in what is one of the very few platforms that is not only backed by a cryptocurrency which has a valid use case and a hedge fund that truly believes in the project, but also a venture which has so far succeeded in following through on it’s outlandish promises right from ICO…which cannot be said for many which have crashed and burned throughout a tough bear market, poor management and outright scams.
There will be much more news, as well as exciting initiatives that are to follow in the lead up to launch so be sure to follow DCL Plazas and Decentraland on Twitter. First, check out the official launch video, below:
Last but not least, a big thank you for supporting DCL Plazas, a huge congratulations to everybody involved with Decentraland, from Ari and Esteban for overseeing the project, to the developers, the marketing and community leads, right the way through to the Decentraland community, all of whom have been here through thick and thin, Babylon and Solidity, Honeybadgers rants, and beyond. Here’s to the next chapter.
It’s time to build a real decentralized community, one that demonstrates to the world we live in that blockchain has all the fundamentals to improve things for the better.
