“Charlie Bit My Finger” is the latest in what is starting to feel like a never ending stream of historical memes making a grab for some NFT cash. Once holding the title of “most watched video” on YouTube, it has been viewed over 880 million times.
To commemorate the 14th anniversary of the meme, Origin is listing the video as an NFT on its marketplace. The grand event commences on May 24 at 2PM UTC, with no end-time indicated. Following the auction, the original video will be removed from YouTube. The winner will, weirdly, also have the opportunity to make a parody video with the now teenage Harry and Charlie.
The meme comes from a simpler time, when all it took to become a meme sensation was a video of a cat falling over or a photo of a sad hamster. Spoiler alert, the hamster wasn’t sad. Now, to garner even the slightest of an internet murmur you need to get a 200-thousand-ton shipping container stuck in a canal for a week.
